New brain interface

...we have a neuromorphic silk-based interface that researchers are about to try in humans. It’s a silk substrate with wires embedded in it. You put two small incisions in the skull, and stretch it out on top of the brain. You don’t have to penetrate the brain itself. The device just sinks onto the cortex and the silk biodegrades and you have a mesh laying on top.

The six-foot-two, 330-pound ATLAS is capable of a range of natural movements and is equipped with:

On-board real-time control computer;
Hydraulic pump and thermal management;
Two arms, two legs, a torso and a head;
28 hydraulically actuated joints;
Carnegie Robotics sensor head with LIDAR and stereo sensors; and
Two sets of hands, one provided by iRobot and one by Sandia National Labs.

The team at Duke University fitted the rats with an infrared detector wired up to microscopic electrodes that were implanted in the part of their brains that processes tactile information.

"We could create devices sensitive to any physical energy," said Prof Nicolelis, from the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. "It could be magnetic fields, radio waves, or ultrasound. We chose infrared initially because it didn't interfere with our electrophysiological recordings."

At first, the rats scratched at their faces, indicating that they were interpreting the lights as touch. But after a month - as shown in these videos - the animals learned to associate the signal in their brains with the infrared source.

In the vision for foundry-style manufacturing, a verified design, suitably represented in a metalanguage and conforming to the facility’s manufacturability constraints, will be passed to the foundry. The design must be translated into usable instructions to enable execution of the manufacturing processes. This necessitates that all elements of the foundry are electronically reachable. This will entail a variety of instruction types such as, but not limited to:
• Machine tool path instructions such as for a CNC machine
• Assembly instructions for a pick-and-place robot
• Assembly instructions for human operators joining major subassemblies
• Part and assembly ordering details for off-the-shelf purchased parts
• Logistics requirements to ensure proper part shipment, storage, and use
• Test instructions for quality assurance purposes

идея, короче говоря, состоит в следующем:
1. довести до ума язык META/META-II, позволяющий стандартизованно описать процесс производства чего угодно
2. задизайнить iFAB - фабрику, которая берёт описание продукта на META/META-II и выдаёт собственно продукт
3. iFAB должна уметь "extend own capabilities" - достраивать себя по нужде
4. iFAB может быть пространственно распределённой и состоять из небольших дешёвых блоков
5. главная метрика - не скорость производства продукта, а скорость переконфигурирования. то есть, цель - реально generic foundry, которая может производить что угодно сегодня и что угодно другое завтра
6. заопенсорсить собственно дизайн продуктов - то есть, при этом подходе, написание программ на языке META/META-II, исполняемых iFAB-ом.
